Verneuil-sur-Avre's history is shaped by the location of the city. It used to be on the border between France and Normandy. In August 1424, a battle of the Hundred Years War took place near Verneuil , during which the English took the city and thus controlled Normandy. Only in 1447 did the French recapture Verneuil in a decisive battle.

During the Second World War (1939-1945) Verneuil-sur-Avre was bombed by the Allied Air Force in the summer of 1944 during Operation Overlord and shelled by American artillery . The churches of La Madeleine and Notre-Dame were damaged. In the last days of the occupation, the Wehrmacht executed six young men from the Forces françaises libres .
