Jérôme Carcopino

Jérôme Ernest Joseph Carcopino (born June 27, 1881 in Verneuil-sur-Avre ( Département Eure ), † March 17, 1970 in Paris ) was a French ancient historian , archaeologist and epigraphist .

Carcopino studied since 1900 at the École normal supérieure , where he specialized in history . From 1904 to 1907 he was a member of the École française de Rome . From 1907 to 1911 he worked as a teacher in Le Havre . In 1912 he became a professor at the University of Algiers and inspector of antiquities in Algeria . His career was interrupted by World War I while serving in the Dardanelles . In 1920 he became a professor at the Sorbonne . From 1937 to 1940 he was director of the École française de Rome, 1940/41 and again from 1942 to 1944 he was director of the École normal supérieure. From February 25, 1941 to April 18, 1942 he was State Secretary for Éducation nationale et à la Jeunesse in the Vichy government . He was briefly detained in 1944 and lost his chair, but was rehabilitated in court in 1947.

Carcopino wrote important studies, particularly on Roman history , the sometimes bold hypotheses of which, however, often met with skepticism in research. His most popular main work, La Vie quotidienne à Rome à l'apogée de l'Empire ( Everyday life in ancient Rome during the heyday of the Empire ) deals with everyday life in ancient Rome during the heyday of the Empire. It has been translated into numerous languages ​​and appeared in several German editions.

He was a member of many archaeological and historical institutes in Europe. Since 1930 he was a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres , since 1955 of the Académie française . Since 1923 he was an external member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome.
