Noyon , the Gallo-Roman Noviomagus Veromanduorum is a commune in the Oise and the main town of a canton in the region Hauts-de-France . It is located on the Oise , the Canal Latéral à l'Oise and the Canal du Nord , 24 kilometers north of Compiègne and about 100 kilometers north of Paris .

The municipality of Noyon is 1,800 hectares in size, is 52  m on average and has 13,519 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), of which around 40 percent are migrants.

history

  • In the Roman Empire the place was founded under the name Noviomagus; it was fortified with a city wall in late antiquity.
  • In 531 Noyon became the bishopric of Medardus .
  • In 721, the Frankish king Chilperich II died in Noyon and was buried there.
  • In 768 Charlemagne was crowned King of the Franks in Noyon .
  • In 891 the city was ravaged by the Normans.
  • On July 3, 987, Hugo Capet was crowned King of France in Noyon .
  • Around 1120, the knight Payen de Montdidier in Noyon was appointed the first provincial master for what was then Francia by Hugo von Payns , Grand Master of the Templar Order . Noyon was one of the first bases of the Knights Templar in what is now France.
  • The construction of the cathedral began around 1150 .
  • On July 10, 1509, John Calvin , the founder of Calvinism, was born in Noyon.
  • On August 13, 1516, Francis I of France and Spain's King Charles I , who later became Emperor Charles V, signed the Treaty of Noyon , in which France received Milan and gave up Naples .
  • In 1559, Noyon was awarded to France in the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis .
  • There were two battles at Noyon during the First World War
    • September 1914
    • In 1917 the German army shortened the front and evacuated the city.
    • In the spring of 1918, the city was conquered and retaken. Bombardments to cut off German supplies to the front led to considerable war damage.

In the local elections in March 2014, the mayor candidate of the National Front party received 28.32 percent of the votes cast in the first ballot and 19.56% in the second ballot.
