Hexham is a town on the River Tyne in Northumberland , England . It has 11,139 inhabitants (as of 2001).
Etymology of the name
The name Hexham is derived from the Anglo-Saxon Hagustaldes ea , later Hagustaldes ham . hagusteald means youth, warrior, henchman and courtier ( Hagestolz ); éa means body of water or river and -ham corresponds to the German home.
history
In 674 Wilfrid founded a monastery here. Today's Hexham Abbey dates mostly from the 11th century. You can also visit the city's first English prison built as such.

economy
Hexham is the seat of the Fentimans brewery. In Hexham there is also a production plant for chipboard manufacture by the Austrian company Egger .
