David John "Dave" Cliff (born June 25, 1944 in Hexham ) is a British jazz guitarist .

Live and act

Cliff grew up in Northumberland and started playing in local R&B bands there. In 1967 he moved to Leeds , where he studied at Leeds College of Music with Peter Ind and Bernie Cash . After completing his studies, he moved to London in 1971, where he was part of Tommy Chase's band until 1975 . He also led a quartet with trumpeter Ray Manderson. From 1976 he was part of the quintet of Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh on a European tour. The following year he toured the British Isles with Kenny Davern and Bob Wilber ; with Wilber he also played in the USA. In 1979 he led a band with John Livesey, then worked with Alex Welsh , Wilber and Bruce Turner . In 1987 he presented The Right Time, the first album under his name, on which he worked with Geoff Simkins , with whom he also directed combos over the next few years.

Cliff has performed repeatedly in Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club with the bands of Georgie Fame , Mike Carr , Irene Reid , Dick Pearce and Bruce Adams . From 1993 he was on tour with Humphrey Lyttelton and Acker Bilk . He also played in a duo with Phil DeGreg and Howard Alden and accompanied American musicians such as Slide Hampton , Nina Simone , Kenny Davern , George Masso , Spike Robinson , Herb Geller , Lanny Morgan , Harry Allen , Buddy Childers , Lew Tabackin , Mundell Lowe , Bucky Pizzarelli , Jack McDuff , Eddie Lockjaw Davis , Richie Cole or Ken Peplowski . He can also be heard on recordings by Pete Ind, Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, Jamie Talbot, Tony Coe , the Jazz Renegades , Bruce Adams, Allan Ganley , Allison Neale and Luke Annesley.

Cliff has also taught guitar at Trinity College of Music , the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the Birmingham Conservatoire . In 1998, Cliff received the BT Jazz Award for “best guitarist” .
