Bruce Turner

Malcolm Bruce Turner (* 5. July 1922 in Saltburn ; † 28. November 1993 in Newport Pagnell ) was a British jazz - saxophonist , clarinetist and bandleader.

Life

Bruce Turner learned the clarinet in high school and began playing the alto saxophone while serving in the Royal Air Force during World War II . After the war he played with Freddy Randall from 1948 to 1953 and worked in a dance band on Queen Mary ; he also played in a quartet with Dill Jones and Peter Ind . In 1950 he stayed in New York and studied with Lee Konitz . From 1953 to 1957 he was a member of Humphrey Lyttelton's band . After leaving Lyttelton, he led his own jump band , which existed from 1957 to 1965 and had an appearance in the film Living Jazz (1961). Turner also arranged the music for the film. In 1964/66 he returned to Randall; In 1966 he played with Don Byas and from 1966 to 1970 he was a member of Acker Bilk's band .

In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s he worked again with Lyttelton, he also led his jump band intermittently and worked with Wally Fawkes , John Chilton , Stan Greig (1975/76), Alex Welsh and Dave Green . In the early 1990s he led his own formations again until his death in 1993.

Bruce Turner's autobiography Hot Air, Cool Music , published by Quartet Books , was released in 1984. His early albums were reissued on Lake Records . Turner has also worked with Kenny Baker , Sandy Brown , Lol Coxhill , Wild Bill Davison , Digby Fairweather , Pat Halcox , Keith Smith and Buddy Tate throughout his career .
