Phil DeGreg

Phil DeGreg (* around 1960) is an American jazz pianist and university professor.

Live and act

Phil DeGreg studied psychology at Yale University in New Haven after graduating from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati in 1972 . He also played in a folk rock duo in coffee shops in the New Haven area. He found jazz through the music of Bill Evans and was a member of the Yale student jazz band. He eventually moved to Kansas City, came into contact with the local jazz scene and studied from 1979 to 1982 in the program of the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Workshops , which took place at North Texas State University . He also belonged to the One O'Clock Lab Band , with which the first recordings were made; In 1983 he became a member of the Woody Herman Big Band for a short time . For family reasons - his daughter was just born - he returned to Cincinnati.

In 1987 he became a lecturer in the Department of Jazz Studies at the University of Cincinnati Music Conservatory (CCM) and wrote a textbook ( Jazz Keyboard Harmony ). In addition to his teaching activities, DeGreg presented a number of albums under his own name since the late 1990s, on which musicians such as Joe LaBarbera , Tim Ries , Don Braden , Drew Gress and Randy Johnston participated. He also played on JJ Johnson's recordings ( Live in Concert , 2007). DeGreg has been Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Cincinnati since 1991.
