Irene Reid
Irene Reid (born September 23, 1930 in New York City , † January 4, 2008 there ) was an American jazz singer .
In 1948 she won the talent competition at the Apollo Theater . Then she was part of Dick Vance's band . In 1961 she became a member of the Count Basie Orchestra , with whom she toured and recorded. Then she founded Irene Reid & Co and recorded under her own name for MGM and Verve Records . She became known with albums such as "Room for One More" (1965, with Oliver Nelson ) and "It's Too Late" (1966). She also worked with Lalo Schifrin . With “The World Needs What I Need” (1971) she could no longer follow up on these successes, but continued to perform, u. a. accompanied by Mike Carr's Blue Note Quartet. Only after another album in 1989 did it receive greater recognition again; she recorded another 6 albums for Savant .
