Dick Vance
Dick Vance (* 28. November 1915 in Mayfield (Kentucky) as Richard Thomas Vance , † 31 July 1985 in New York City ) was an American jazz - trumpet player and arranger .
Vance grew up in Cleveland , where he first learned the violin. As a trumpeter he played in Cleveland with J. Frank Terry before joining the Lil Armstrong Band, of which he was a member in 1934/35. He then moved to New York City and played with Willie Bryant , Kaiser Marshall and Fletcher Henderson (1936-38); in Henderson's band he was the lead trumpeter and also sang occasionally. In 1939 he joined the Chick Webb Orchestra and stayed in the band after Ella Fitzgerald took over the leadership . In the next few years he worked for Charlie Barnet , Don Redman , Eddie Heywood (1944/45) and Ben Webster . From 1944 to 1947 he studied at the Juilliard School of Music ; he also worked as a musician in a theater orchestra and as an arranger for Duke Ellington , Harry James , Glen Gray , Cab Calloway , Sarah Vaughan and Earl Hines .
In 1950 Vance played again with Fletcher Henderson in his sextet and then went to the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1951/52 . In 1953 he toured with Don Redman ; otherwise worked in the Savoy Ballroom in the 1950s . In the 1960s he recorded two albums under his own name; In 1969 he went on tour with Eddie Barefield's Bearcats . In the 1970s he played on various Broadway shows (such as No No Nanette , 1971/72) and taught at Manhattan Community College.
Vance has also been involved in recordings of Benny Carter , Cousin Joe , Billie Holiday / Sy Oliver , Billy Kyle's Big Eight , Al Sears , Rex Stewart and Sonny Stitt throughout his career .
