Cousin Joe

Cousin Joe (* 20th December 1907 in Wallace , Louisiana ; † 2. October 1989 ; actually Pleasant Joseph ) was an American blues - and jazz - musicians .

Life

Cousin Joe began his musical career as a church singer. He switched to the blues and started playing guitar and ukulele before switching to piano. In 1942 he moved to New York, where he performed with Dizzy Gillespie , Sidney Bechet , Charlie Parker and Billie Holiday . His first recordings were made as a vocalist under the name "Pleasant Joe" for the septet Mezz Mezzrow / Sidney Bechet ( King Jazz , 1945) in New York. In 1948 he returned to New Orleans. There he played with Lee Allen in clubs in New Orleans and in the Dave Bartholomew Band. In 1964 he was on his first European tour, where he appeared on the BBC ; In 1971, on a tour of France, an album was created with him as a pianist and guitarists Jimmy Dawkins and Clarence Gatemouth Brown and a rhythm group from Chicago.
