Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown (born April 18, 1924 in Vinton , Calcasieu Parish , Louisiana , † September 10, 2005 in Orange , Texas ) was an American blues guitarist who, however, also mastered other instruments and musical styles.

In addition to the guitar , he also played the violin , harmonica , piano , mandolin , viola and drums . In addition to the blues , he was also at home in jazz , bluegrass , zydeco , cajun and calypso . Gatemouth Brown referred to his music as "American music, Texas style". He influenced musicians as diverse as Albert Collins , Frank Zappa , Lonnie Brooks , Eric Clapton and Joe Louis Walker .

Career

Brown began his musical career as a drummer during World War II . He gained attention as a guitarist in 1947 when he stepped in for T-Bone Walker at a club in Houston . This resulted in tours in the south and southwest of the United States and a record deal with Peacock Records . The hits from this early period include a. Gatemouth Boogie , Okie Dokie Stomp , Boogie Rambler and Dirty Works At The Crossroad .

In 1960, Brown took part in a television show in Nashville . On this occasion he made a number of country recordings. In the late 1960s, however, he retired from the music business, moved to New Mexico and worked as a deputy sheriff.

During the blues and folk revival in the 1970s, Brown was rediscovered as a blues musician. He toured Europe twelve times and recorded nine albums. On behalf of the US State Department, he was on tour as an ambassador for American music. a. in East Africa.

In 1975 he recorded the album "Gate's on the Heat" with Canned Heat .

In the 1980s, Brown became popular again in the States. He had an average of 250 to 300 gigs a year. In 1983 he was awarded a Grammy for the album Alright Again! excellent and was nominated for five more. He also received eight Handy Awards .

In 1999 Clarence Gatemouth Brown was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame . In September 2004, Brown was diagnosed with lung cancer. Brown, who had last lived in New Orleans , left the city in September 2005 before the approaching Hurricane Katrina . A little later, the musician with heart disease died in his Texan hometown of Orange .
