American Music, Texas Style is an album by American blues musician Clarence Gatemouth Brown that he recorded for Verve in 1999 .
The album
Brown was 74 years old when he recorded the album, but he makes it clear that he is still not lacking in energy. On the CD he emphasizes his love for jazz. Young jazz musicians are part of the studio band, such as the trumpeter Nicholas Payton and the tenor saxophonist Tony Dagradi . This can also be seen in the selection of pieces; three jazz standards from Duke Ellington's repertoire and two from Charlie Parker's time with Jay McShann can be heard on the album .

[It] is so damn powerful that it's hard to disagree ... "(American Music is an aptly titled celebration of ... agile violin playing, soulful guitar playing, and rough, rough vocals .... It's so damn powerful it's hard to disagree. )
- Mojo (10/99, p. 112) - "... [It's] good to hear Gatemouth Brown ... filling the gap between guitar blues and swing - real swing, Count Basie style ... Super summertime swing ... "(It's good to hear Gatemouth Brown filling the gap between guitar blues and swing, real Count Basie style swing ... great summer swing.)
- All Music Guide - Alex Henderson - "Brown's voice is thinner than it used to be, but his guitar playing is as energetic as ever. While this CD isn't definitive, it's a good, solid effort that Brown can be proud of." (Brown's voice is thinner than it was, but his guitar playing is still as powerful as ever. While this CD is not final, it's a good solid piece of work that Brown can be proud of.)
