Tony Dagradi

Tony Dagradi (* 22. September 1952 in New York City ) is an American jazz - saxophonist (tenor and soprano saxophone) and clarinetist (clarinet and bass clarinet). He played for Carla Bley .

Live and act

Tony Dagradi grew up in New Jersey and took lessons from Tony Aless . In the early 1970s he studied at Berklee College of Music , a. a with Andy McGhee , Herb Pomeroy , Charlie Mariano and Gary Burton . After two years he left college to work as a musician. During this time he was co-leader of the experimental band Inner Visions , in which trombonist Gary Valente also played.

In the mid-1970s he settled in New Orleans; there he was 1978 founder of the formation Astral Project . He also worked with musicians from the local music scene such as Professor Longhair , Ellis Marsalis , James Booker , Dr. John , Johnny Adams , Larry Coryell and Nat Adderley together. At the beginning of the 1980s he was a member of Carla Bley's band and worked on their albums Social Studies (1980), Live! (1981) and I Hate to Sing (1981/83) with.

Dagradi formed a new band in 1995 and recorded the album Live at the Columns: The Tony Dagradi Trio , accompanied by colleagues from the Astral project such as Johnny Vidacovich and James Singleton .

Dagradi works parallel to his musician activities as a professor at the University of New Orleans. He initiated u. a. the Jazz Underground program and worked as a music educator at the Loyola School of Music in New Orleans.
