Roy Clark
Roy Linwood Clark (* 15. April 1933 in Meherrin , Virginia ; † 15. November 2018 in Tulsa , Oklahoma ) was an American with the Grammy excellent country musician , who scored in the 1970's to the biggest stars of his genre. He became known through numerous television appearances, including hosting the Hee Haw Show.
Life
Roy Clark learned to play the banjo and guitar from his father, an amateur musician. As a teenager, he won national banjo competitions twice in a row. After he had acquired the necessary experience through years of touring through clubs and radio shows, he accompanied Wanda Jackson at her appearances in the late 1950s .
In 1962 he was signed to the Capitol label . A year later he had a top 10 hit with his pop-oriented single Tips of my Fingers . A number of successful albums have been released over the decade. But he became known mainly through television appearances. The jovial, always good-humored Clark was always a welcome guest. From mid-1969 he co-directed the new television show Hee Haw with Buck Owens . The series became an unexpected success and lasted well into the 1980s. The multi-instrumentalist had ample opportunity here to demonstrate his versatile talents.
In 1968 he switched to the dot label . He released numerous successful albums and singles and was showered with awards. In 1973 he received the most coveted award in country music: he was voted "Entertainer of the Year" by the Country Music Association . He received the same award from the Academy of Country Music in 1972 and 1973 . He has also been named the best instrumentalist of the year several times. His biggest hits during those years were Yesterday When I Was Young (1969), I Never Picked Cotton, A Simple Thing Called Love (1971), Honeymoon Feelin ' (1974) and If I Had to Do It All Over Again (1976). He had his first number one hit in the country charts in 1973 with the single Come Live with Me, a composition by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant . Between 1963 and 1989 he had a total of 52 hits in the country charts. In addition to the country genre, Clark also worked with jazz and blues musicians such as Gatemouth Brown ( Makin 'Music , 1978) and Joe Pass ( Play Hank Williams , 1994).
In 1976 he switched to the ABC label . In the same year he went on a three-week tour of the Soviet Union. At the beginning of the 1980s he changed the label again, but the time of his great success was over. Nevertheless, he was awarded a Grammy in 1982. In Branson he opened the "Roy Clark Celebrity Theater". In 1987 he became a permanent member of the Grand Ole Opry . He donated large sums of money to charity projects several times.
On November 15, 2018, Clark died at his Tulsa home of complications from pneumonia at the age of 85 .
