Industrial history

For a long time, the small town had supra-regional importance. In the 1920s, the Belgian tire manufacturer Englebert founded a production facility for bicycle and automobile tires in Clairoix. After the takeover of Englebert by the German Continental AG in 1979, the plant was continued until 2009 and finally closed on March 11, which led to violent protests in the region.

The 1.5 m high, slim menhir du Mont Ganelon (also called Le Pierrot) stands in a forest on the 137 m high Mont Ganelon, east of Clairoix.
