Lagny (formerly Laigny-les-Chataigniers ) is a French municipality with 527 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Oise in the region of Hauts-de-France ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Compiègne and the Canton of Thourotte .

location

Lagny is a long street village about eight kilometers northeast of Noyon at 80 to 90 meters above sea level. In the northeast it is dominated by a wooded hill (160 m). Already in Roman times a paved road - part of a Via Agrippa - passed nearby. Today Lagny is linked to Noyon and Roye by the D934 .

history

The name of the village can be derived from the words lanon (wide view over the plain) and gny , from the Latin ignis (fire), (forge, place where iron ore is extracted).

Finds of stone tools and polished stones suggest a prehistoric settlement. On the eastern slope of the hill (near a water tower) there is an old cemetery with stone sarcophagi from the time of the Templars (copy in the Museum of Noyon).

At the eastern end of the hill, near the geodetic point (163 m), was the "Ch'moulin d'heu" mill. A second mill was found on eighteenth-century maps at the location of the farm called "Du Moulin de Bas". In the nineteenth century a third mill was in operation at a place called "Penchemont", near the old Roman road.

The medieval village had a fortified castle, which was first destroyed on December 2, 1430 by the Burgundians who lifted the siege of Compiègne . It was rebuilt and destroyed several times until the 19th century. Some traces remained near the church.

The village had a traditional agriculture with cattle breeding and many professions related to forestry. In particular, the chestnut was used to make ladders for picking fruit. They also produced barrels and shoes, as well as charcoal: the remains of ovens remained on the northeast side of the hill in a place called "ché fours".
