Duke of Gandía
The Spanish hereditary title Duke of Gandía or Duke of Candia - based on the place Gandia in the Valencia - was awarded in 1399 by King Martin I of Aragón to Alfonso IV the Elder , Count of Ribagorza . After the death of his son Alfonso the Younger , the duchy passed to Hugo de Cardona , in 1433 it was given to the Infanta Juan, who later became King John II , who passed it on to his son Carlos de Viana (1421-1461), King of Navarre . With his death, Gandía fell back to the crown.
In 1483 King Ferdinand II of Aragon awarded the title a second time. Rodrigo de Borja , who later became Pope Alexander VI. , had acquired the duchy for his son Pedro Luis de Borja in order to settle a debt that the king had owed to the city of Valencia since 1470 . After Pedro Luis 'death, the duchy passed to his brother or half-brother Juan (Pedro Luis' mother is unknown); after the murder of Juan on his son. The 4th Duke was St. Francisco de Borja , the 5th Duke was his son Carlos, who later became the Viceroy of Portugal . In 1520 the Duke of Gandía was named Grand Grand of Spain.
