Ludwig I. (Ligny, St. Pol and Brienne)
Ludwig I of Luxembourg (French: Louis I de Luxembourg , * 1418 ; † December 19, 1475 in Paris ) was a Connétable of France from 1465 to 1475. He was the son of Peter of Luxembourg , Count of Saint-Pol , and Margarete von Baux. He was also a nephew of Bishop Ludwig von Thérouanne , Chancellor of France , and Count Johann II of Ligny .
He inherited the counties of Saint-Pol, Brienne and Conversano from his father, and from his uncle in 1441 the counties of Ligny and Guise , as well as the dominions of Enghien , Roussy and Beaurevoir .
Ludwig was a close ally of Count Karl von Charolais (Karl der Kühne) and was with him one of the military leaders of the Ligue du Bien public . He fought in 1465 in the battle of Montlhéry against King Louis XI. to which he defected shortly afterwards. On October 5, 1465 he was appointed Constable of France , from 1466 to 1473 he was governor and deputy to the king ( Lieutenant du roi ) in Normandy , then in Picardy . Ludwig's personal ambitions and his lack of loyal behavior aroused suspicion with the king. The Duke of Burgundy handed him over to the king in 1475, who accused him of high treason , convicted him and had him beheaded on December 19, 1475 on the Place de Grève in Paris .
On July 16, 1435, Ludwig married Johanna von Bar, Countess of Marle and Soissons , daughter of Robert von Bar, the bypassed grandson of Duke Robert I von Bar , in the Château de Bohain . With her he had seven children:
- Johann (died in 1476 near Murten), Count of Marle and Soissons

- Karl (* 1447; † 1509), Bishop of Laon
- Anton († 1519), Count of Brienne, Ligny and Roussy

In his second marriage he married Maria von Savoyen, daughter of Duke Ludwig von Savoyen, on August 1, 1466 . With her he had two or three children:
- Ludwig II († 1503), Prince of Altamura , Duke of Andria and Venosa
