Charles I. d'Amboise

Charles I. d'Amboise († February 22, 1481 in Tours ) was one of the most active feudal lords in King Charles VII's France . He was the eldest son of Pierre d'Amboise , the brother of Cardinal Georges d'Amboise . He was lord of Chaumont-sur-Loire , Sagonne , Meillant , Charenton , Dompuis and Dampierre . In 1475 he was appointed Count of Brienne and in 1477 he became lord of Arcis-sur-Aube .

With the accession of King Louis XI. he fell out of favor at first, but then became one of his closest confidants. Louis XI. eventually made him Knight of the Ordre de Saint-Michel . He was royal envoy, commander of the royal army, governor of Champagne (1473–1481), Burgundy (1477–1481) and from 1480 deputy to the king in Île-de-France .

On August 23, 1428 he married Catherine de Chauvigny († after December 16, 1485), daughter of André de Chauvigny, Lord of Ravel and Jacqueline de Beaujeu . The couple had six children:

Charles I. d'Amboise was buried in the Franciscan church in Amboise .
