Martin I of Aragon

Martin I , called the boy ( el Joven ) (* 1376 ; † July 25, 1409 in Cagliari ), from the House of Aragón , was from 1392 to 1401 together with his wife Maria of Sicily and after her death 1401 to 1409 sole king of Sicily .

Life

Martin was the son of King Martin I of Aragon and his first wife Maria de Luna. He married Queen Maria of Sicily in 1392 and thereby became her co-regent. For this purpose Maria had been kidnapped to Catalonia in order to thwart her marriage plans with the Visconti family . Martin's father landed with an expedition as a representative of his son and daughter-in-law in Sicily and restored the rule of the crown.

After Maria died in 1401, Martin ruled alone. On November 26, 1402 he married Blanka of Navarre . As King of Sicily, Martin was completely under the influence of his father, who communicated directly with the councils in Sicily from Aragon . Martin died in 1409 during a campaign to Sardinia without legitimate descendants. His father followed him as king as Martin II the old man.
