Punata is a small town in the Cochabamba department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
Punata is the seat of the administration of the eponymous province of Punata and the central place of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Punata on the 490 km² fertile plateau of the Valle Alto . The village is located at an altitude of 2730 m about ten kilometers from the edge of the Cordillera Oriental , which rises to over 3,600 m east of Punata and 4,100 m north of Punata.

Punata lies in the transition area between the Bolivian Altiplano in the west and the Bolivian lowlands in the east.
The mean average temperature of the region is just under 18 ° C (see climate diagram Cochabamba) and fluctuates only slightly between 14 ° C in June and July and 20 ° C in November. The annual precipitation is about 450 mm, with a pronounced dry season from May to September with monthly precipitation below 10 mm, and a humidity period from December to February with 90–110 mm monthly precipitation.
Transport network
Punata is 47 kilometers by road southeast of Cochabamba , the capital of the department of the same name.
From Cochabamba the paved highway Ruta 7 leads in a south-easterly direction 41 kilometers to San Benito , from there a dirt road over six kilometers further south-east to Punata. Punata is connected to Cochabamba by a railway line, which leads eight kilometers beyond Punata to Arani on the edge of the Cordillera.

Due to the historically grown population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of Punata 92.6 percent of the population speak the Quechua language.
