Castillo Simancas

Simancas is a city in the province of Valladolid in Spain . It lies on the Pisuerga River and was founded under the Romans as Septimanca .

The citadel of Simancas was the site of fighting between Christians and Moors in 934 and 939 ( Battle of Simancas ) . It was renewed in 1563 by order of Philip II . It houses the Royal Spanish General Archives , which contains holdings on domestic and foreign policy in Spain and Europe from the 15th to 18th centuries. This fund is of fundamental importance for the era of Emperor Charles V and King Philip II of Spain. In addition to the archive holdings, there is also an extensive library on Charles V, Philip II and their successors. It is considered to be one of the most important European archives.

The holdings on overseas possessions and affairs were transferred to Seville with the Archivo General de Indias in 1785 .
