economy
Agriculture, which also included a little cattle breeding (e.g. pigs, chickens), has always played the most important role for the population of the region; Crafts, trade and service industries developed in the village itself. In the second half of the 20th century, the tourism sector gained a certain importance as a source of income for the place.
history
The region belonged to the Vaccaei settlement area in pre-Roman times ; Claudius Ptolemy later mentions a place called Meóriga , which is equated with Mayorga. In the early and high Middle Ages, the place played a not insignificant role as a border town to the Kingdom of León , to which it even belonged at times. In the 13th century, the place was temporarily owned by the House of Castro and under the manorial rule ( señorio ) of the - meanwhile destroyed - Cistercian monastery of Santa María de Sobrado . Mayorga was surrounded by a city wall by the 14th century at the latest.
Attractions
- Only a few parts of the medieval city wall have survived - including a gate, which is commonly only called El Arco ('the arch').
- The church of Santa María de Arbas, which is largely made of brick, is a testimony to the Mudéjar style in the region, which primarily includes the churches of Sahagún . The striking bell tower is largely unadorned; the entrance to the church is in the south porch ( portico ). The church is furnished with two baroque altars and the statues of San Antón and San Roque .
- The two churches of Santa Marina and Santa María del Mercado , dating from the 15th century, are also largely made of bricks.
- All that remains of the baroque church of San Salvador is the 18th century bell tower, square below, octagonal above and closed in a dome with a lantern . The church itself was completely rebuilt in the 1970s. Inside it hides an extraordinary late Gothic altarpiece with pictures of the Master of Palanquinos (photo → weblink), which originally stood in the church of Santa María de Arbas .
- An imposing court column ( roller blind ) from the 17th century is to be seen as a sign of the small town's extensive independence.
- The town hall ( ayuntamiento ) is located in a two-storey arcade-lined city palace from the same period.
- In the heart of the city is the Museo del Pan , which has dedicated itself entirely to the production and history of the staple bread.
Festivals
Apart from the usual feast days, the residents of Mayorga celebrate the day of the transfer of part of the relics of St. Toribio (see below).
