The continual population decline in the second half of the 20th century is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting unemployment.
economy
For centuries, the inhabitants of Aguilar lived mainly as self-sufficient farmers from agriculture, which also included a little cattle-raising (sheep, goats, chickens) and, to a lesser extent, viticulture. Durable or preserved surpluses such as grain, animal skins etc. could only be sold to traveling traders because of the great distances to the urban markets.
history
In the 8th century, the area was used by the Moors conquered, but already in the 9th century Asturian-Leonese army of conquered areas north Duero back ( reconquista ) . At the end of the 10th century, the Moorish military leader Almansor temporarily destroyed the Christian successes. In the 11th century, the Kingdom of León extended its territory again to the Duero border; the place Castro Mayor (old place name) was one of them. After previous attempts, León finally united with the Kingdom of Castile in 1230 . The place experienced its heyday in the late Middle Ages and in the early modern period.
Attractions
- The Iglesia de San Andrés , built in the Mudéjar style on the foundations of a castle, belonged to a monastery that has not been preserved. It impresses with its facade with two bell gables and an exceptionally representative portal with archivolts stepped back four times, all of which form horseshoe arches . While the walls of the church are mostly built from more or less precisely hewn quarry stones , the slightly protruding middle part of the facade shows a pure brick facing with an almost square Alfiz edging that is at the level of the profiled transom plates . Is one each from octagonal to both sides drums brick pillar with capitals . The interior of the church has three aisles ; the brick pillars rest on large square bases . The central nave is spanned by an open roof structure , whereas in the side aisles there are sloping open beam constructions - above each of the pillars there is a small row of arcades . The apse is broken polygonally; Above the altar tabernacle there is a figure of the church patron.
- A court column (roller blind) from the 16th century stands on a multi-tiered round base on the slightly sloping square in front of the church . Its horizontally divided shaft ends in a tip studded with stone balls. Such a pillar can - depending on the size of the place - be understood both as a symbol of the imaginary presence of the landlord (padrón) and of the responsibility and self-administration of the city's citizens.
- The Iglesia de Santa María still has a medieval apse. The remaining parts come from the late 16th century. The pointed arch portal on the south side can be reached via a representative staircase and leads into the three-aisled interior of the church, where there are several altarpieces from the 15th to 18th centuries.
- Surroundings
- A little outside the village is the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Fuentes , built in the 17th century , which served as a church for some monks of the Franciscan order until the dissolution of all church properties ( Desamortización ) in the first half of the 19th century. The other monastery buildings have disappeared. Today the church is the destination of an annual procession.
