Because of the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms, many workers and their families migrated to the larger cities in the second half of the 20th century ( rural exodus ); however, due to the relative proximity to the city of Valladolid, the population has been largely stable since the 1990s.
economy
The area around Cubillas de Santa Marta was and is to a large extent agricultural, with livestock traditionally playing a less important role; the place offered the necessary regional services in the fields of handicraft and trade. In the 19th century the Canal de Castilla ran through the municipality. Cubillas de Santa Marta is part of the small wine-growing region " Cigales "; tourism only plays a subordinate role.
history
Around 500 BC The area was inhabited by the Celtic ethnic group of the Vaccaeans . In the 2nd century BC BC the Romans brought large parts of the Iberian Peninsula under their control; they also brought the art of viticulture with them. In the 5th century AD the Vandals came , but they were pushed to North Africa by the Visigoths . In the 8th century, Arab-Moorish armies penetrated far to the north, but were unable to conquer some areas ( Basque Country , Cantabria , Asturias ). Already in the 10th and 11th centuries they were pushed south by Christian armies ( reconquista ) , with the Duero valley delimiting the respective spheres of influence for a long time. The local church was built in the 13th century.
Attractions
- The Iglesia de Santa Marta is St. Martha of Bethany consecrated; the single-nave but at least cruciform building is covered with a barrel vault (" pointed barrel ") pointed at the apex . This, as well as the overall exact stone processing with otherwise extreme lack of decoration, bring the church building close to the architecture of the Cistercian order . A colorful baroque altarpiece takes up the entire height and width of the flat-closing apse . In 2004 the church received an organ that is known beyond the region.
- The Ermita del Santo Cristo , built mostly from rubble stones , probably dates from the 16th / 17th centuries. Century. Only the facade, protected by a small pillar-supported porch (portico) and the small bell gable (espandaña) are made of stone .
- There are some rock cellars ( bodegas ) on the outskirts .
- Also on the outskirts is a spring (fuente) with an attached washing area (lavadero) .
