Cigales is a small wine-growing region with its own protected designation of origin ( Denominación de Origen , DO) in the northeast of the province of Valladolid and in the southwest of the province of Palencia in the northern Spanish region of Castile and León .

Growing area

The approximately 2250 hectare wine-growing region of Cigales lies at an altitude of around 750  m and extends northeast of the city of Valladolid along the area of ​​influence (cuenca) of the Río Pisuerga . A predominant continental climate is only influenced by the Atlantic on a few days a year , with cold winters (night frost) and warm to hot summers; Rainfalls are rather rare and scanty (on average approx. 400 mm / year).

The soils are chalky and crumbly; only a small part of the total cultivation area of ​​approx. 575 km² is planted with vines. About 500 wineries (viticultores) harvest annually to 25,000 hl grapes of red varieties (tintos) Tempranillo and Garnacha , and the white varieties (blancos) Verdejo and Albillo that in about 30 wineries ( bodegas ) pressed and mainly rosé (rosado) to be expanded .

Attractions

In some places in the growing area, e.g. B. in Mucientes or in Dueñas, there are still traditional rock cellars ( bodegas ) , but these are only used to a limited extent. A number of stone huts and enclosures (chozos) are spread across the area . In some places there is a medieval castle (castillo) or castle ruins; every place has one or even two interesting church buildings from different style periods.
