Aerial photographs of Operation Highjump (1946–1947) were used to map it. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named him in 1955 after Thomas W. Waldron, captain's assistant on the Porpoise in the United States Exploring Expedition (1838-1842) under the direction of Charles Wilkes .
