The USS Porpoise was a 1835-built Brigantine the United States .
It was launched on May 31, 1836. It was one of the two ships of the United States Exploring Expedition (1838–1843) under the direction of Charles Wilkes , its captain was Cadwalader Ringgold (1802–1867). During this research trip in 1840 it was used to map the coastline of what is now known as Wilkesland , part of East Antarctica . The ship met on January 29, 1840 on the Third French Antarctic Expedition (1837-1840) under the direction of Jules Dumont d'Urville .
She was later used as a patrol ship off the west coast of Africa to stop the slave trade there and from 1846 to 1848 in the Mexican-American War . After she was temporarily shut down in 1852, she took part under the command of Ringgolds in the North Pacific Exploring and Surveying Expedition (1853-1856). In September 1854 she went missing in the China Sea .
