Toribio de Mogrovejo alias Turibius of Lima (born November 18, 1538 in Mayorga , Spain , † March 23, 1606 in Saña , Peru ) was a Spanish missionary and third Archbishop of Lima . He was canonized and declared the patron saint of Latin American bishops . He is revered by the locals as the “protector of the Indians ”.

Life

Saint Toribio was born in Spain in 1538 and was President of the Church Court of Granada when the Spanish King Philip II , who had learned of his great talent, proposed him to the Pope for appointment as Archbishop of Lima. Toribio came to Lima in 1581 and did all his might to combat moral and spiritual decline, sharply condemning all forms of abuse and oppression, with which he created many enemies. He visited the entire territory of his archdiocese three times, most of which he traveled on foot or on a mule. He converted numerous Indians, organized meetings for priests and bishops, founded the first seminary , involved the religious in the work in the parishes and during his time as bishop the number of parishes and mission centers doubled. He himself shared everything he owned with the poor. On March 23, 1606, on Maundy Thursday , he died in a secluded chapel with the Indians, where he preached and encouraged the Indians in their faith. He was founded by Pope Benedict XIII. Canonized in 1726.

On April 27, 2006, the feast of St. Toribio was celebrated in the Cathedral of Lima with a congress, a procession of the saint's relics and a Holy Mass . In addition to the Congress, the Archdiocese organized numerous other initiatives. Brochures, books and other information material on the figure and ministry of St. Toribio were also published.
