Aliağa is a city and a district about 50 km north of İzmir on the Turkish Aegean coast in the province of İzmir .
An oil refinery, several ship demolition companies and tourism are Aliağa's main economic pillars. About fifteen kilometers north of Aliağa are the remains of the ancient Aeolian city of Myrina , about six kilometers south of the ruins of Kyme and 20 km east of those of Aigai . The Güzelhisar dam is about 12 km east of the city .
After an administrative reform in 2014, all districts are directly subordinate to the Lord Mayor of Izmir. The former mayors of the municipalities ( Belediye ) were downgraded to the rank of Muhtar . Since then, the city has been identical in terms of population and area to the district.
