Menderes (formerly Cumaovası ) is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Izmir and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir Belediyesi (city municipality) Izmir . The city is located about 20 kilometers south of the center of Izmir. After a regional reform, the city is identical in terms of population and area to the district.

The district is located in the south of the province and borders on Seferihisar in the west, Karabağlar , Gaziemir and Buca in the north, Torbalı in the east and Selçuk in the southwest . The southern border forms the Bay of Kuşadası (Kuşadası Körfezi) . In the center of the district, south of the city, is the Tahtalı Barajı reservoir . Its outflow, the Tahtalı Deresi , flows into the sea at Gümüldür. Izmir Airport (Adnan Menderes Havalimanı) is located in the city . There are several seaside resorts on the coast in the south.

The place was previously called Cumaovası and was renamed in 1987 after the former Prime Minister Adnan Menderes .

Attractions

In the south of the district near Ahmetbeyli is the ancient sanctuary of Klaros , about 1.5 kilometers south of it on the coast the associated port of Notion . On the road that leads from there to Menderes, after about 15 kilometers a path branches off to Değirmendere, where the ancient city of Kolophon was located on Karaca Dağı Mountain , for which Notion was also the port.
