Torbalı is a district and the associated county seat in the Turkish province of Izmir . Torbalı is about 20 km southeast of Izmir on the E 87 from Izmir to Aydın . In 2014 the city had 150,127 inhabitants. After a regional reform, the city is identical in terms of population and area to the district.
The city lies on a plain in the Küçük Menderes river valley and is surrounded by mountains in the north and west. The highest point in the district is Keçikalesi Dağı at 781 m. Torbalı received its status as a district in 1926. A year later, the city became a Belediye . There are 22 villages in the district.
Attractions
About 5 km southwest of the village of Özbey are the ruins of the ancient city of Metropolis in Ionia , the town's predecessor. The name Torbalı is derived from Metropolis. The Hittite rock relief of Karabel is located 30 km north on the road to Kemalpaşa .
