Urla is a Turkish district town with 42,559 inhabitants in the province of Izmir in western Turkey . After a regional reform, the city is identical in terms of population and area to the district.
It is located 38 kilometers from Izmir on the road to Çeşme . Urla includes several districts and 12 smaller islands in Urla Bay. The largest island is Uzunada. The districts Urla Iskelesi (4 km from the center), Zeytinalanı and Çeşmealtı (6 km from the center) are located directly on the sea. The bays of Menteş, Gülbahçe and Balıklıova are also visited by those looking for relaxation from Izmir for swimming.
history
The place gained importance in ancient times due to its culture. The Ionian region is home to Klazomenai and the Bronze Age site of Limantepe. During excavations there, sculptures and cultural and historical evidence were found, which are now exhibited in the Louvre , the National Museum of Athens and the Archeology Museum of Izmir .
Personalities
Urla is the home of the Orthodox new martyr Michael of Smyrna . The Greek Nobel Prize winner Giorgos Seferis comes from the place . The Turkish writer Necati Cumalı also grew up here.
