Feti Okuroğlu (born August 5, 1971 in Torbalı ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. He is associated with the clubs Bursaspor and Galatasaray Istanbul . For the latter, he is often appointed to the squad of the old star team, which plays games at charity events. Even at the beginning of his career, he was predicted to have a great career, which he was never able to achieve due to recurring injuries. Due to his position and his dangerous offensive advances, he was compared to the then very popular Dutch defensive star Ronald Koeman .

Torbalıspor and Karşıyaka SK

Okuroğlu was born in 1971 in the district town of Torbalı, İzmir Province, and started playing club football in the youth of Torbalıspor . Here he was discovered in 1988 for the Turkish national youth teams and soon after was one of the regularly nominated players. Through his appearances in the national teams, several clubs became aware of him and tried to get the young defensive talent on board. The change succeeded Karşıyaka SK , as one of then two first division clubs in the province of Izmir. As an eighteen-year-old at the time, he made the leap into the starting eleven at the first division. In his second season at Karşıyaka, the 1990/91 season , his club missed relegation and rose to the 2nd Lig . In the summer of 1991 Okuroğlu took part with the Olympic selection of his country in the Mediterranean Games in 1991 and won the silver medal. Okuroğlu had developed into one of the league's shooting stars in the two years, which is why several first division clubs tried to get him.

Bursaspor

For the 1991/92 season Okuroğlu moved to the traditional club Bursaspor . This club started with the Yugoslav coach Trainerorđe Milić in the season. Milić had Okuroğlu come on almost exclusively as a substitute player, which Okuroğlu only ever played a few minutes. After the club under Milić fell far short of expectations, he was replaced in mid-November by former coach Yılmaz Vural . This coach was known for enjoying working with young players. Okuroğlu quickly got a regular place and made his breakthrough a little later. This season he formed a successful team with then unknown players such as Ali Nail Durmuş , Hakan Şükür , Taner Ertaş and Vedat Vatansever , who would later become well-known greats in Turkish football. The team was supplemented with veterans such as Feyzullah Küçük , Turan Şen , Ján Gabriel . With this team you reached the 6th place in the table at the end of the season. Okuroğlu, actually active in the defensive position of the Libero , repeatedly switched to the offensive of his team due to his technique, which was found to be very good, and thus gave several assists. He himself scored three goals over the entire season and at the age of twenty he was his team's defense chief. In the Turkish Football Cup of the same season they reached the final. In the cup final, which was played back and forth at the time, Bursa clearly won their first game in front of their home crowd with 3-0 against Trabzonspor . They lost the second leg with 1: 5 and missed the cup win that was believed to be safe. After this defeat, they competed in the Prime Minister's Cup against Fenerbahçe Istanbul . The game decided Bursaspor 3-1 for themselves and won this cup for the second time after 1971, in which the club already prevailed 1-0 against Fenerbahçe. Okuroğlu came on in the 84th minute for Ümit Şengül .

In the following season, Okuroğlu started very successfully. As a defender, he scored two goals on the first day of the home game against Gaziantepspor on October 23, 1992 and was voted into the team of the game day by all major newspapers. On the second day of the match he scored two more goals in the away game against Sarıyer SK , was elected to the team of the matchday and with four goals came first on the scorer list. Due to his high ball safety and strong physique, coach Vural sometimes switched him from libero position to forward position during the current match, creating an unexpected goal hazard for the opponent. At the end of the season, his team is again in 6th place in the table and Bursaspor reached the quarter-finals in the Turkish Football Cup. Okuroğlu was here together with Vedat Vatansever with seven goals after Ali Nail Durmuş, who had scored eight, the second most successful goalscorer of his club. He was declared one of the league's shooting stars by the trade press and received offers from the three major Istanbul clubs Beşiktaş Istanbul , Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul at the end of the season . Okuroğlu, who had previously declared his sympathy for Galatasaray Istanbul, was linked with Galatasaray several times during the season. At the end of the season he signed a preliminary contract with Galatasaray, but extended it at the same time with Bursaspor. After those responsible at Galatasaray learned of this fact, they broke off further commitment efforts. Okuroğlu stayed with Bursaspor and was nominated again for the summer of 1993 on the occasion of the 1992 Mediterranean Games in the squad of the Olympic selection of Turkey. The team, supervised by the later start coach Fatih Terim , won the gold medal at this tournament. After this success, Galatasaray tried again to Okuroğlu. But since coach Vural left the club in the summer of 1993 and was replaced by the German coach Sepp Piontek, who was firmly planning with Okuroğlu, no change came about. Under the new coach, the club reached ten points in nine league games and fell far short of expectations. So the club management reacted and replaced Piontek with Nevzat Güzelırmak . Also under this trainer one experienced a mixed season and finished 9th place in the table at the end of the season. Okuroğlu enjoyed the trust of both coaches.

Galatasaray Istanbul

Due to the disappointing course of the 1993/94 season there was a displeasure at Bursaspor, which is why several players expressed the desire to want to leave the club. Besides Galatasaray, Beşiktaş Istanbul , Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Trabzonspor were also interested in Okuroğlu . In the latter case, the club coach Şenol Güneş expressed the desire to see Okuroğlu in his team several times during the season. Shortly after these clubs had expressed their interest in Okuroğlu, Okuroğlu commented on the rumors of change and said that he was already in agreement with Galatasaray President Adnan Polat and only the two clubs would have to agree on the transfer fee. According to this statement, Fenerbahçe especially tried to get Okuroğlu and so drove the transfer fee up. In order to drive up the price again, Bursaspor declared that they did not want to sell Okuroğlu. The 18 billion Turkish lira offered by Galatasaray rose to 30 billion through the bidding of Fenerbahçe, with Bursaspor insisting on the then record-breaking transfer fee of 45 billion. Therefore, there was no change and Okuroğlu started the season at Bursaspor. Since Bursaspor was interested in handing over his player at a profit and he wanted to switch to Galatasaray, it was announced in the press that they would hand over Okuroğlu to Galatasaray for a transfer fee of 25 billion. After this statement, Beşiktaş expressed interest in Okuroğlu this time and again delayed the move to Galatasaray. Finally, Galatasaray reached an agreement with Bursaspor on a transfer fee of 24 billion lira and ended the month-long transfer negotiations. Okuroğlu was then flown in a helicopter into the Ali Sami Yen Stadium before a home league game and presented to the fans as a spectacular new purchase. Since no contracts were allowed to be concluded in the current season, the contract was only signed in mid-October at the start of the winter transfer period. During the routine health check after this change, Okuroğlu, who had been out of work several times in his last time at Bursaspor, was again diagnosed with an injury, which meant that he was out until the winter break.

He made his debut for his new club in the quarter-final first leg of the Turkish Football Cup against his old club Bursaspor. In this game on January 18, 1995, he was placed in the starting line-up by German coach Reinhard Saftig and played the full length. With the beginning of the second half of the season, the team that became autumn champions suffered several defeats and so gambled away the championship lead. As a consequence, the club's management reacted, quitting a coach for the first time in their club's history and thus sacking Saftig. After this dismissal, Müfit was introduced to Erkasap as an interim coach and looked after the team until the end of the season. Okuroğlu, who was still a regular under Saftig, lost this place under the new coach Erkasap and was only substituted on for the last two match days.

The next season, a new coach was hired with the Scots Graeme Souness . Under this coach, he immediately received a regular place and was praised by him as one of his most reliable players during the season. For the trade press, however, like the entire team, it fell short of expectations. He was often used by Souness in attacking midfield. The league ended with 16 points difference to the champions and arch-rivals Fenerbahçe far behind in 4th place in the table. They only reached the final in the Turkish Football Cup and met arch rivals Fenerbahçe here. In the cup final, which was played back and forth at the time, they won their first game in front of a home crowd 1-0. The second leg ended after extra time 1-1, making Galatasaray cup winners.

For the 1996/97 season, the contract with Souness was not extended and Fatih Terim was introduced as the new coach in his place . Terim was considered one of the great sponsors of Okuroğlu and already trained him in the Turkish U-21 national team , the Olympic selection and the Turkish national team . Okuroğlu got a regular place straight away, but was thrown back again and again due to injury. During the game against Gençlerbirliği Ankara on matchday 7 , he had to be replaced in the 75th minute due to injury. Later it turned out that his old injury in the groin area, on which he had already had several operations, was causing problems again. Okuroğlu was out until the winter break and only returned to the team for the second half of the season. Returned to the team, he could not fight for a regular place because he was either not convincing or was out again due to injury. Since Galatasaray was confronted in the defensive position again and again with form weaknesses or injuries of the players, Okuroğlu was used at every opportunity. So at the end of the season you can reach the hoped-for Turkish championship and become Turkish Supercup winner.

Since Terim also pursued international goals, special investments were made in defense for the coming season. For the next season, Gheorghe Popescu, an internationally known head of defense, was signed. In addition, Terim successfully adapted the then unknown youngster Fatih Akyel from his own youth into the defense. Due to this strong competition, Okuroğlu sat on the bench for almost the entire season and was only used in five league matches. In addition, Okuroğlu failed again several times due to injuries and thus lost contact with the team. Terim, who was still convinced of Okuroğlu's talent and emphasized this again and again, gave Okuroğlu several opportunities to prove himself. Due to recurring injuries and the resulting form weaknesses, these opportunities were missed. At the end of the season, Galatasaray managed to defend the title in the Turkish championship. Okuroğlu's contract expired at the end of the season and it was speculated that Galatasaray would not renew with him.

Trabzonspor and Izmirspor

Since Fatih Terim was very interested in the commitment of Tolunay Kafkas from Trabzonspor , Okuroğlu Trabzonspor was offered as a partial payment for the change. So Kafkas moved to Galatasaray, while Trabzonspor received a transfer fee of $ 2,500,000 and Okuroğlu in return. Okuroğlu initially rejected this move, but agreed a little later and signed with Trabzonspor. Okuroğlu also had injuries at his new club. He missed the first three game days of the season due to injury and only played eight minutes on the fourth game day. The following game days he played regularly, but remained below the expectations of coach Gorden Milne . As early as November, he was put on the list by the coach who should leave the club for the winter break. Okuroğlu turned down a move and stayed with the club until the winter of 1999 without making a game.

For the second half of the 1999/2000 season he dissolved his contract with Trabzonspor by mutual agreement and went to the then second division club Izmirspor . Here he played until the end of the season and then ended his active professional football career.

National team

Okuroğlu was nominated for the first time in the Turkish U-18 national team during his time at Torbalıspor in 1988 and played eleven games for the U-18s over the next two years.

In 1990, at the age of 19, he was nominated by the then U-21 national coach Fatih Terim for the squad of the Turkish U-21 national team and played 24 games in three years.

On the occasion of the Mediterranean Games in 1991 and 1993, he was appointed to the squad of the Olympic selection of Turkey, which also looked after Terim. In 1991, Okuroğlu and his team won the silver medal and two years later the gold medal.

In March 1993 he was nominated for the first time for the squad of the Turkish national team by the then national coach Sepp Piontek as part of a qualifying game of the 1994 World Cup against the national team of San Marinos , but only sat on the bench in this encounter.

He made his debut in the Turkish national team under the new national coach and his old sponsor Fatih Terim on April 20, 1994 during a friendly against the Russian national team .

Four months later, he received his final nomination in a friendly against the Macedonian national team , but was on the bench during that encounter.

Coaching career

After the end of his football career, he went back to his hometown Torbalı and continued his life here. Since 2010 he has been in charge of a football school for his old club Galatasaray Istanbul and tries to find new talent for the traditional club. At the same time he took on the position of assistant coach at Çaybaşıspor .
