Fatih Akyel (born December 26, 1977 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player and coach.
Player career
society
Akyel began his football career at the age of six with the Istanbul amateur club Kaanspor . At the age of 16 he moved to Konyaspor and a few years later to Galatasaray Istanbul . With Galatasaray, Fatih became Turkish Super Lig champions in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000, Turkish Cup winners in 1997, 1998 and 2000, and 2000 UEFA Cup winners and UEFA Super Cup winners.
In 2001 Akyel moved to the then Spanish Champions League representative Real Mallorca . After a year he accepted an offer from Fenerbahçe Istanbul , with which he became Turkish champion in 2004. In the 2004/05 season he was sorted out by his trainer Christoph Daum ; During the winter break he went to VfL Bochum . At the beginning of the 2005/06 season he finally moved to Greece, where he played for PAOK Saloniki . From January 2006 Akyel played again in the Turkish Süper Lig for Trabzonspor . For the 2007/08 season he moved to MKE Ankaragücü for one season .
He ended his career in 2010 with the Istanbul club Tepecik Belediyespor .
National team
From 1997 to 2004 Akyel was a fixture in the Turkish national team . He made his debut on August 20, 1997 in a 6-4 win against Wales in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup . In third place at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, he was also a regular player.
Coaching career
In the summer of 2014 Akyel was hired as an assistant coach at the second division side Elazığspor and assisted the head coach Ümit Özat . He was released in mid-December 2014.
In August 2015 he took over the East Anatolian third division club Gümüşhanespor and thus worked as head coach for the first time. Since he did not have the required coaching license at that time, his assistant coach Recep Yazıcı was specified as the official head coach. Akyel finished the season with his club fifth in the table and qualified for the play-off phase, in which the last promoted TFF 2. Lig is determined by the knockout system .
