Hénin-Beaumont is a French town in the Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . With 26,022 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) it is the largest municipality of the Communauté d'agglomération d'Hénin-Carvin , an interest group of French municipalities.

history

Since about 950 the today's district of Hénin-Liétard was known under the name Hennium , Henninium or Heninium , later he was called Martinus Henain . In 1274 the fortified place was called Hanin-le-Liétard for the first time ; the remains of an old castle are still preserved. Hard coal has been mined here since 1852 , which triggered a strong immigration of workers. In 1859 the place was connected to the railway. Hénin-Liétard was badly affected in the First World War: in October 1914 it was looted and devastated by German troops, and in April 1917 it was heavily destroyed when it was retaken by the Allies.

The municipality was formed in 1971 from the merger of the towns of Hénin-Liétard and Beaumont-en-Artois, after coal mining in the region ended with the closure of the last mine in October 1970.

The place has a relatively high unemployment rate, in 2010 it was 12.3 percent, in 2015 over 20 percent.

In the local elections in March 2014, Steeve Briois , the Front National's candidate , was elected mayor.
