The municipality is located 16 kilometers from Lens and 20 kilometers from Lille . The neighboring town of Carvin is five kilometers away.

history

On September 1, 1947 Libercourt was separated from the municipality of Carvin by decree of the Conseil d'État .
As early as April 1890, residents of the village had called for Libercourt to be independent in a letter. At that time the place had 900 inhabitants. The distance to the neighboring town of Carvin was about five kilometers, and the two towns were separated by a strip of forest about two kilometers wide. On July 18, 1890, the prefect issued a decree calling for an investigation into the division of the municipality. However, this was answered in the negative by the Carvins council, as Libercourt had neither its own school nor its own administrative structures. In 1897 a new attempt was made to detach Libercourt from Carvin, but this was again rejected by the authorities in March 1900. A petition in October 1925 received 481 signatures, but was still unsuccessful. In 1937 the prefect ordered another survey, 1090 residents of the village were in favor of the community's independence, but this failed again at the local council of Carvin. On April 2, 1947, he finally voted for Libercourt to be independent.
