Hulluch ( Dutch Hullode ) is a French municipality with 3448 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Lens and the Canton of Wingles .

geography

The municipality of Hulluch is located about five kilometers north of Lens and 25 kilometers southwest of Lille .

history

The place can be proven by archaeologists as early as Gallo-Roman times . There has been a castle in this place since the beginning of the 14th century. This medieval complex was largely destroyed by repeated wars. In the time of Louis XIV , a richly decorated castle was built by Baron de Bertoult. This castle was destroyed in the First World War. From 1902 to 1978 coal was mined in the village .

Personalities

The poet Charles Sorley was killed near the place during the First World War.
