Vendin-le-Vieil (Flemish: Oudwenden ) is a French municipality with 8608 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Lens and is part of the canton of Wingles .

geography

Vendin-le-Vieil is located directly northeast of Lens in the northern French coal basin and is framed by the Canal de la Deûle and the Canal de Lens .

Vendin-le-Vieil is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Wingles in the north, Meurchin in the northeast, Pont-à-Vendin in the east, Annay in the southeast, Loison-sous-Lens in the south, Lens in the south and southwest, Loos-en-Gohelle in the West and Bénifontaine to the northwest.

The Route nationale 47 runs along the edge of the municipality .

history

The village appears as Wendinium as a place within the County of Artois in the late 10th century (996) for the first time in the books of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Gand.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, coal mining declined and the mines closed.
