It is a canal of the branch canal type , which branches off the canalised Deûle at Courrières , which is now part of the major shipping route Dunkirk-Scheldt , and reaches the port of Lens after 8.5 kilometers . history

The originally 11 kilometer long canal was put into operation at the end of the 19th century and was used to transport the coal mined in the city of Lens by cargo ship. Since the coal mines were closed, it has largely lost its importance. The part that runs in the urban area has meanwhile been filled in, so that today only 8.5 kilometers are left.
