Noyelles-sous-Lens is a French commune in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Lens and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Harnes . The municipality with 6561 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is part of the Communauté d'agglomération de Lens-Liévin .

Noyelles-sous-Lens is located in the historic Gohelle countryside . Neighboring municipalities are Loison-sous-Lens in the north, Harnes in the northeast, Fouquières-lès-Lens in the east and Sallaumines in the south and west.
The A21 autoroute runs through the municipality . The Canal de Lens limits the municipality to the north.
history
With the discovery of coal deposits in the 18th century, mines were driven underground. Coal mining began in the middle of the 19th century. In the Courrières mining disaster in 1906, numerous miners were killed in mine 23.
