The Barcelona-Catalunya train station ( Catalan : Estaciò de Catalunya or Estaciò de Plaça de Catalunya ) is a regional and underground station in the Spanish metropolis of Barcelona . It is located under Plaça de Catalunya in the heart of the city, on the border of the Barri Gòtic and Eixample districts. It is the central transport hub of Barcelona. It is served by RENFE and FGC trains , as well as four lines of the Barcelona Metro , two of which are FGC lines.

history

Catalunya was opened as a subway station for 1924 for today's line L3 , the L1 was added in 1926. The station for the railroad was built in 1931 when the Ferrocarril del Norte extended its underground line from Saragossa from its previous terminus Estació del Norte to Plaça de Catalunya in order to advance into the center of the city. At the end of the 1960s, the tunnel - called the Meridiana tunnel - was extended to the west and merged with the Aragó tunnel , which ran north , to create a connection to the new Barcelona-Sants main train station, which opened in 1970 .

RENFE

Rodalies Barcelona

The Spanish state railway company RENFE serves the station with the local transport lines R1, R3, R4 and R7 of Rodalies Barcelona . The RENFE train station is located in one of the two tunnels that leave Sants in an easterly direction. In this tunnel, the RENFE forms a four-lane route with the Barcelona Metro between Catalunya and Arc de Triomf . It is the only line in Barcelona that has both metro and rail trains.

Other regional traffic

The Catalunya Express serves Catalunya with the Ca4b line, which connects L'Hospitalet de Llobregat with Lleida-Pirineus .

FGC

Catalunya is one of the two train stations - next to Espanya  - of the FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya) railway company , from which trains run to the Catalan hinterland. From Catalunya the underground-like lines L6 and L7 and the S-Bahn-like lines S1, S2, S5 and S55, which are not part of the Rodalies network, run.

Subway

The Barcelona Metro goes to Catalunya with the L1 , L3 , L6 and L7 metro lines .
