location

population

The city has grown from less than 10,000 inhabitants at the beginning of the 20th century to the second largest city in Catalonia with around 264,923 inhabitants today (as of January 1, 2019) and the city with the highest population density in Spain (20,246 inh. / Km²). The population density is much higher in some districts, however: The La Florida district has a density of around 75,000 inh. / Km², making it one of the most densely populated areas in the world. The city's population growth is mainly explained by the immigration of emigrants from Andalusia since the time around the Spanish Civil War , but especially from the 1950s. Due to the close proximity to the capital and economically strong city of Barcelona with its need for workers, many people settled in L'Hospitalet.

economy

Until the 20th century, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat was largely a farm only. The nearby Barcelona was supplied with fruit and vegetables. Pig breeding was still carried out here until the 1950s. The importance of this branch of the economy then declined when brick factories in particular - L'Hospitalet de Llobregat was called Barcelona's brickworks - and later also the metallurgical industry settled. Today the city has a mixed economic structure. Industry has a share of less than 15%, the service branch and especially trade with more than 30% are dominant. Among the companies based here, Caprabo (supermarkets) with net sales of € 2194 million (net profit € 7.5 million) as well as Filmax , Prosegur (security) and MRW (logistics company) should be highlighted. The city is also home to part of the University of Barcelona as well as the exhibition center.

traffic

L'Hospitalet is crossed by the L-1 , L-5 , L-8 and L-9 Sud lines of the Barcelona Metro , with the L-1 line ending in the Bellvitge district. The train station L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, located near the city center and also connected to the metro, is an important starting and finishing station in the Rodalies Barcelona S-Bahn-like system . Another train station is located in the Bellvitge district. In addition to local rail transport , a dense bus network connects the districts with each other, as well as L'Hospitalet de Llobregat with its neighboring communities in the Baix Llobregat district and the capital Barcelona .

L'Hospitalet is located between the second and third ring of expressways in the south of Barcelona and is therefore very conveniently located near Barcelona Airport . In addition, important streets are the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes , which is one of the most important inner-city traffic axes in Barcelona, and which in the Avinguda de la Gran Via area is an extension to the area of the municipality of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, and the Carretera de Collblanc.
