The Japanese architect Toyo Ito (ITO AA) and the Spanish architect Fermín Vázquez (b720 architects) together won an international competition that was carried out as part of a new redevelopment plan on the Plaza de Europa in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat. Their concept included the construction of two different high-rise buildings that are in a balanced relationship to one another. Despite the clear contrast between the buildings, the relationship they form is harmonious and complementary. Both towers are connected by an atrium at the front. There is a Japanese garden above the atrium . The inspiration for the two skyscrapers were old Venetian towers. The preparation of the plans began in 2004 and ended in 2006.

Hotel Porta Fira (Fira 1)

The Hotel Porta Fira, also known as Hotel Santos Porta Fira or Fira 1 , is located between Barcelona-El Prat Airport and the city of Barcelona at Plaza de Europa 45. It belongs to the Santos hotel chain , which specializes in building unique facilities and specialized in exclusive customer service. The owner is José Luis Santos .

Construction of the 113 meter high hotel began in May 2006. Completion took place in January 2010. The construction costs amounted to 84 million euros . The hotel has 27 floors and 2 basement floors. It has 345 hotel rooms. The usable area is 34,688 m².

The hotel tower has a geometrically complex, organic, non-orthogonal shape in the style of deconstructivism . The facade is double-shell. The inner shell of the building consists of a light curtain wall made of aluminum and glass panes. The outer facade forms a second skin that offers texture and takes up the variable geometry of the tower. It consists of red aluminum tubes that are attached to ball joints so that the surface geometry can be followed.

This is divided into three parts: The lower two thirds are determined by variable rotation and displacement. In the upper part, on the other hand, the floor plan is distorted and enlarged, thus changing the size and surface of the hotel tower.

The structure of the building is made of reinforced concrete .

There is a wellness area on the 17th floor with a view of the city of Barcelona.

The official opening of the hotel took place at the end of June 2010, during the prevailing financial and economic crisis. José Luis Santos attended the ceremony.

Torre Realia BCN

Torre Realia BCN

The Torre Realia BCN, also called Fira 2 , is an office building and headquarters of the Realia real estate group . It stands at Plaza de Europa 41 and marks the end of the square. The office building is symmetrically opposite the two high-rise buildings on the other side of Gran Vía .

Construction of the approximately 112 meter high office building began in May 2006. It was completed in May 2009. The office building has 24 floors and 3 basement floors. There is a shopping center on the ground floor and 399 parking spaces in the basement. The usable area is 45,420 m².

The building has a cubic shape in the modern style . The office building complements and stands in contrast to the perceived twist and movement of the hotel building. At first glance it appears to be just a pure office building with a glass facade as a curtain wall. However, the red vertical center of the building is designed in an organic shape and reflects the structure of the hotel tower. The structure is made of reinforced concrete .
