The comarca of Barcelonès is in the province of Barcelona in the Autonomous Community of Catalonia ( Spain ). The community association has an area of approx. 145 km², and 2,278,437 inhabitants (2019). In terms of area, Barcelonès is the smallest comarca in Catalonia (41st place) in terms of population, but it ranks 1. The population density of the area is one of the highest in Europe.
location
The association of municipalities is located in the central coastal area of Catalonia, it borders in the north on the Comarca Vallès Occidental , in the northeast on the Comarca Vallès Oriental and Maresme , in the southeast on the 19 km long coast of the Mediterranean and in the west on the Comarca Baix Llobregat . Together with the comarcas Alt Penedès , Baix Llobregat, Garraf , Maresme, Vallès Occidental and Vallès Oriental, the region forms the territory of Àmbit Metropolità de Barcelona .
Barcelonès lies in the plain between the Mediterranean coast in the southeast, the Serra de Collserola mountain range in the northwest, and the rivers Río Llobregat in the south and Río Besòs in the north.
economy
Together with the capital Barcelona, Barcelonès is the economically strongest association of municipalities in Spain. The service, handicrafts and administrative organizations are located in the capital itself. In recent years city tourism has grown into an important economic factor. A powerful metal processing, chemical, printing, textile, paper, construction and electronics industries have established themselves on the outskirts of the city. The port of Barcelona, one of the largest in Spain and the whole of the Mediterranean, is an important economic factor.
traffic
The region has well-developed urban motorways that are integrated into the country's motorway network. An extensive, dense S-Bahn ( Rodalies ) and underground ( Metro Barcelona ) network connects Barcelona with the entire region. The AVE operates a high-speed line on the Barcelona - Tarragona - Lleida - Saragossa - Madrid route . A continuation of the line to Girona and on to the French high-speed network is currently being planned or under construction. Barcelona International Airport is located in the district of El Prat de Llobregat in the neighboring comarca of Baix Llobregat . The port of Barcelona has moorings for merchant, ferry, cruise ships and yachts.
