The Comarca (a kind of community association) Montsià is located in the province of Tarragona of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia ( Spain ). It has an area of ​​728 km² and a population of 67,436 (2019).

location

The association of municipalities is located in the extreme southwest of Catalonia. It borders in the north on the Comarca Baix Ebre , in the west on the Autonomous Community of Aragon ( Matarraña ), in the south on the Autonomous Community of Valencia ( Baix Maestrat ) and in the east on the 77 km long coast of the Mediterranean . Together with the comarcas Baix Ebre, Ribera d'Ebre and Terra Alta , the region forms the territory of Terres de l'Ebre .

Montsià is located on the coast of the Costa Daurada between the rivers Ebro in the north and Senia in the south. Between the ridge of the Ports de Tortosa-Beseit in the far west on the border with Aragon and the Serra de Montsià ridge on the coast in the east lies a broad plain, the Pla de la Galera . In the far west, the Ebro flows into a wide, flat river delta with numerous lakes and lagoons into the Mediterranean. The island of la Banya is connected to the delta via a 5 km long sandbank . The river delta, the sandbank and the island make up the Parc Natural Delta de L'Ebre , the most important wetland area in Catalonia.

economy

In agriculture, rice, wine, vegetables and olives are grown. In the cattle industry, mainly poultry but also cattle are raised. The fish-rich Ebro Delta offers numerous fishermen their livelihood. Industrial companies in the food, chemical, textile and construction industries are located in the comarca. Tourism is also of great importance.
