Amposta is a Spanish city ​​in southeastern Catalonia . It is the capital of the Comarca Montsià . It is the southernmost comarca of both the province of Tarragona and all of Catalonia.

The municipality is located on the Ebro , near the Ebro Delta , with an elevation of 8 meters above sea level. The population was 20,738 on January 1st, 2019. Agriculture, especially rice cultivation , is the largest branch of the economy.

Attractions

The suspension bridge over the Ebro and the remains of a medieval castle are worth seeing. The extensive Ebro Delta with the lagoons of Tancada and l´Encanyissada as well as the rice fields in the delta landscape with canals are ideal for hiking. The water source ( ullals ) and the swamps are also worth seeing . Amposta is also the starting point for excursions into the Ebro Delta and has river shipping.
