history

Sant Carles got its name in memory of a convent that existed at that time.

The place has Arabic roots, but was not until 1780 by King Charles III. founded as a city with the aim of expanding it as a trading base for America .

A number of structures were worked on between 1780 and 1788, but they were not completed after the king's death.

Over time, Sant Carles was built in a neoclassical style and has turned into an attractive coastal town.

Disaster at the campsite

On July 11, 1978 , at the “Los Alfaques” campsite, about two kilometers south of Sant Carles in the neighboring municipality of Alcanar , the explosion of a truck loaded with liquefied gas caused a catastrophe in which 217 people were killed and over 300 people died Some were seriously injured. The gas spread across the campsite and ignited on the numerous cooking appliances that were set up. Many of the injured are still suffering from the consequences of the inferno.
