Alcanar is the southernmost municipality in Catalonia . It lies in the Comarca (county) Montsià in the province of Tarragona , on the border of the Autonomous Community of Valencia .

For many Spaniards with a second residence as well as for tourists, the beach of Alcanar ( Platja de l'Estanyet ) is a magnet.

The community became famous in 1978 when a tanker truck loaded with propene exploded near a campsite. The Los Alfaques tanker accident killed 217 people and injured over 300 people.
