The Girona train station is the station of the Spanish city of Girona on the Costa Brava and is in possession of the infrastructure authority ADIF . It is located on the international connection France-Barcelona and has been served by high-speed trains since 2013.

history

The first trains reached Girona in 1862 when the line from Maçanet (now Maçanet – Massanes station) was opened. In 1973 the route in the urban area of Girona was increased and a new train station opened at the same location. In 2013, the station was expanded to include an underground section when the high-speed line Barcelona-Figueres-Vilafant was opened. Since then, Girona has been served by the high-speed trains AVE and TGV . Originally, it was planned to move the broad-gauge section underground, but this project was postponed indefinitely, so that today's provisional solution will probably last for a few years.

investment

Girona train station consists of a six-track above-ground section where all broad-gauge long-distance trains stop. One of these tracks is equipped as a three-rail track with European standard gauge, so that even before the completion of the city tunnel, freight trains could run from France to the Montmeló freight station east of Barcelona. The six tracks are accessed by four platforms. The underground part comprises two platform and two through tracks. The connection to the rest of the station is ensured by escalators and elevators.

Long-distance transport

Since the end of 2013, high-speed trains of the categories AVE ( RENFE ) and TGV ( SNCF ) have been running on the high-speed line Barcelona – Figueres-Vilafant, which was completed in January 2013 . These trains, operated in cooperation by both railways, stop in Girona, which results in the following offer:

In addition, a pair of Euromed trains runs from Figueres-Vilafant to Valencia Joaquin Sorolla once a day .

In the future there will be a daily pair of TGV trains between Barcelona-Sants and Genève , which will also stop in Girona.

The Talgo hotel trains operated by Elipsos to Zurich HB and Milano Centrale in Girona stopped until the end of 2012, and the one to Paris-Austerlitz until the end of 2013 . Until April 2015, Girona station was served once a week by the Estrella Costa Brava night train , which ran from Portbou via Figueres , Girona, Calella , Mataró , Barcelona-Sants and Madrid Atocha to Madrid Chamartín . In the opposite direction, the train also ran once a week to Cerbère .

Regional traffic

Regional transport is carried out by two lines of the Catalan regional transport network. The R11 line carries trains as regional and media distancia from Barcelona-Sants via Granollers (regional only), Girona and Figueres to Cerbère / Portbou. The trains from Barcelona end in Cerbère, those to Barcelona start in Portbou.

In order to relieve these trains, the R1 line of Rodalies Barcelona and the Maçanet-Massanes transfer hub, the Cercanias Girona brand was introduced on March 24, 2014 . Local trains run every two hours under the line designation RG1 from Figueres via Girona, Blanes , Calella, Mataró and Barcelona-Sants to L'Hospitalet de Llobregat . Thus, the towns on the Costa del Maresme are now connected to the AVE train station in Girona.
